What Do You Need for ForeFlight? The Complete iPad & ADS-B Setup for Pilots

ForeFlight has transformed the way general aviation pilots plan and manage their flights. Charts, airport information, weather, traffic, flight planning, navigation and much more can now live on a single device.


But if you are a student pilot, new aircraft owner or simply building your first Electronic Flight Bag (EFB), you may be wondering:


What do I actually need to use ForeFlight in the cockpit?


The answer is simpler than it might seem. A practical ForeFlight setup generally comes down to five key components: an iPad, ForeFlight, a GPS source, an ADS-B receiver, and the right mounting and power accessories.


Here is how they work together.



1. Start With the Right iPad


ForeFlight Mobile is designed for Apple iOS devices, making the iPad the natural centerpiece of a portable EFB system.

For many general aviation cockpits, the iPad mini is an excellent choice. Its compact size makes it easier to position on a kneeboard, yoke or window mount without taking up excessive cockpit space, while still providing enough screen area for charts, maps and flight information.

One important decision is whether to choose a Wi-Fi-only iPad or a Wi-Fi + Cellular model.

The difference matters because Wi-Fi-only iPads do not contain an internal GPS receiver. Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads do include GPS, and importantly, you do not need to activate a cellular data plan for the GPS to work.

That does not mean a Wi-Fi-only iPad is unsuitable for flying. It simply needs an external GPS source, which can be provided by many aviation ADS-B receivers.



2. Install ForeFlight


The next piece is obviously ForeFlight Mobile itself.

Before flying, pilots should download the charts and data required for their trip while connected to the internet. It is also important to configure ForeFlight correctly, including allowing Location Services and Precise Location so the application can receive and display position information.

Think of ForeFlight as the software at the center of your EFB. The iPad provides the computing platform, while external devices can feed ForeFlight additional information during flight.



3. Add an ADS-B Receiver


For many GA pilots, a portable ADS-B In receiver is what turns an iPad running ForeFlight into a much more capable cockpit tool.

Receivers such as the ForeFlight Sentry family can provide ForeFlight with GPS position, ADS-B traffic and FIS-B weather information. Depending on the Sentry model, additional capabilities can include AHRS backup attitude information, pressure altitude and carbon monoxide monitoring.

Connection is straightforward. A Sentry creates its own Wi-Fi network. The pilot connects the iPad to that network and then verifies the receiver under ForeFlight's Devices section.

This means you do not need an internet connection in the airplane for the Sentry to communicate with your iPad.

One important limitation to remember: portable ADS-B traffic should never be treated as a complete picture of every aircraft around you. ForeFlight notes that displayed traffic may not represent all nearby traffic, particularly depending on your aircraft's ADS-B Out configuration and ground-station coverage.



4. Secure the iPad in the Cockpit


Buying the iPad and ADS-B receiver is only part of building a good EFB.

You also need to decide where the iPad will live during the flight.

Common solutions include:

  • Kneeboard – compact and particularly useful for students and rental-aircraft pilots.

  • Yoke mount – keeps the display directly in the pilot's field of view when the aircraft configuration permits it.

  • Suction mount – provides flexible positioning on a suitable cockpit window.


ForeFlight itself emphasizes securing the iPad in the cockpit and identifies mounts and kneeboards among its recommended iPad accessories.

Whatever solution you choose, make sure the tablet does not interfere with flight controls, instruments, visibility or emergency egress.



5. Don't Forget Power


An EFB is only useful while it has power.

Running ForeFlight at high screen brightness while maintaining wireless connections and GPS operation can place significant demands on the iPad battery during a long flight.

A good cockpit setup should therefore include a reliable charging solution. Depending on the aircraft and your operating preferences, that might mean an aircraft power adapter, USB-C charging cable, portable battery pack or a combination of these.

For longer flights, redundancy is valuable. A charged portable power bank can provide a useful backup if aircraft power becomes unavailable.

The individual components are not particularly complicated. The challenge for many pilots is making sure they select components that work well together and fit the way they actually fly.


Student pilots and pilots who frequently switch between rental aircraft may prefer a lightweight, portable setup based around a kneeboard. Cross-country and IFR pilots may want additional GPS redundancy and multiple mounting options. Aircraft owners may prefer a more comprehensive ADS-B receiver and a more permanent cockpit mounting ecosystem.

Do You Need a Cellular iPad If You Have ADS-B?


Not necessarily.

This is one of the most common areas of confusion for new EFB users.

A Wi-Fi-only iPad paired with a compatible ADS-B receiver that provides GPS, such as a Sentry, can display GPS position in ForeFlight.

A Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad, however, has its own built-in GPS receiver. That can provide an additional independent position source—and again, you don't need to pay for a cellular plan just to use that GPS.
