DOES FOREFLIGHT WORK WITHOUT INTERNET? WHAT PILOTS NEED TO KNOW

Can you use ForeFlight without Wi-Fi or cellular service while flying?
The short answer is yes. ForeFlight can provide navigation, moving maps and flight information without an active internet connection—provided your iPad and equipment are properly configured before departure.
But there are important differences between offline charts, GPS positioning and live ADS-B weather and traffic.
Here's what every general aviation pilot should know.
1. ForeFlight Works Offline—If You Download Your Charts
ForeFlight doesn't need continuous internet access to display charts already stored on your iPad.
Before departure, connect to Wi-Fi and download the necessary:
VFR sectional and IFR charts
Airport information and procedures
Navigation databases and relevant flight data
Pilot tip: Always verify your downloads are complete and current before leaving the ground.
Without downloaded charts, some information may be unavailable once your internet connection disappears.
2. GPS Does Not Require Cellular Service
One common misconception is that ForeFlight needs cellular data to track your aircraft.
It doesn't.
However, your iPad needs a GPS source.
Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad: Includes built-in GPS that works without an active cellular data plan.
Wi-Fi-only iPad: Does not include built-in GPS and requires a compatible external receiver for reliable in-flight positioning.
This distinction is particularly important when choosing an iPad mini for aviation.
3. ADS-B Weather and Traffic Work Without Internet
Want to see nearby traffic and receive weather information while airborne?
A compatible portable ADS-B receiver, such as the ForeFlight Sentry family, can make that possible.
These receivers collect available ADS-B broadcasts and send information directly to ForeFlight through a local Wi-Fi connection.
Depending on coverage and equipment, pilots can receive:
ADS-B traffic information
FIS-B weather products
GPS position data
Important: ADS-B weather is not equivalent to live internet weather. Broadcast information can be delayed or unavailable, and ADS-B traffic does not show every aircraft.

4. Why Does My iPad Say "No Internet Connection" When Connected to Sentry?
This message is normal.
Sentry creates a Wi-Fi network that connects your iPad to the receiver, but that network does not provide internet access.
To verify the connection, open:
ForeFlight → More → Devices
Your Sentry receiver should appear as a connected device.
A "No Internet Connection" message alone does not mean your ADS-B system has stopped working.
5. What Is the Best ForeFlight Setup for Flying Offline?
For a practical general aviation EFB, consider these essentials:
iPad mini: Compact enough for many GA cockpits.
GPS source: Built-in GPS or a compatible external receiver.
Portable ADS-B receiver: Adds available traffic and weather information.
Secure cockpit mount: Keeps your iPad accessible during flight.
Backup power: Helps maintain device availability on longer flights.
The goal is a dependable system that works together without requiring an internet connection in the air.
