ForeFlight Not Showing GPS Position? 7 Common Problems and How to Fix Them

You're preparing for a flight, open ForeFlight on your iPad, and suddenly your aircraft position disappears. The moving map loads, but the familiar blue airplane icon is nowhere to be found.

If your ForeFlight GPS is not working, the problem could be a simple iPad setting, poor satellite reception, or a disconnected external GPS receiver.

Before replacing any equipment, try these seven troubleshooting steps to restore your GPS position.

1. Location Services are disabled

One of the first things to check when ForeFlight is not showing your GPS position is whether your iPad allows the app to access location data.

How to fix it:

  1. Open your iPad's Settings.

  2. Go to Privacy & Security → Location Services.

  3. Make sure Location Services is enabled.

  4. Select ForeFlight and set location access to Always.

  5. Enable Precise Location.

Restart ForeFlight and check whether your aircraft position appears.

ForeFlight recommends these settings when troubleshooting internal GPS problems.

2. Your Wi-Fi-only iPad doesn't have built-in GPS

Not every iPad includes an internal GPS receiver.

Wi-Fi-only iPads require an external GPS source to display live GPS position in ForeFlight. Wi-Fi + Cellular models include built-in GPS, even without an active cellular data plan.

How to fix it:

If you use a Wi-Fi-only iPad, connect a compatible external GPS receiver, such as a ForeFlight Sentry or Sentry Mini.

An external receiver can provide position information while also delivering ADS-B weather and traffic data.

3. Your Sentry ADS-B receiver isn't connected

Your iPad may have disconnected from your Sentry receiver's Wi-Fi network.

If ForeFlight cannot communicate with the receiver, it may stop receiving external GPS information.

How to fix it:

  1. Make sure your Sentry is powered on.

  2. Open iPad Settings → Wi-Fi.

  3. Connect to the Sentry Wi-Fi network.

  4. Open ForeFlight → More → Devices.

  5. Verify that your receiver appears.

If Sentry still doesn't appear, open your iPad's ForeFlight app settings and enable Local Network access.

4. Your GPS receiver has poor satellite reception

Aircraft structures, heated windshields, and certain mounting locations can interfere with GPS reception.

A receiver positioned deep inside the cockpit may struggle to maintain a reliable satellite signal.

How to fix it:

Move your external GPS receiver to a location with a clearer view of the sky, following the manufacturer's mounting instructions.

Allow the receiver time to acquire satellites, then verify its GPS status in ForeFlight.

Avoid positioning the receiver where it obstructs your view or interferes with aircraft controls.

5. Airplane Mode disconnected your external receiver

Airplane Mode can disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, interrupting communication between your iPad and an external GPS device.

The iPad's internal GPS remains available, but a Wi-Fi-only iPad still needs its external GPS connection.

How to fix it:

If you use Sentry, re-enable Wi-Fi after activating Airplane Mode and reconnect to the receiver.

For a compatible Bluetooth GPS device, verify that Bluetooth is enabled and the device is connected.

6. ForeFlight's aircraft position marker is hidden

Sometimes GPS is working, but ForeFlight isn't displaying your aircraft icon because of its ownship display settings.

ForeFlight's Enable Ownship setting controls when the airplane location marker appears on the map.

How to fix it:

Open ForeFlight's settings and check Enable Ownship.

For normal moving-map use, select Always, then verify that a valid GPS source is available.

Other ownship settings can limit when and where the marker appears.

7. Your iPad's GPS information isn't updating correctly

If your iPad has built-in GPS but ForeFlight still cannot determine your position, incorrect date, time, or timezone settings may contribute to the problem.

How to fix it:

Open Settings → General → Date & Time and enable Set Automatically.

Then restart ForeFlight and test GPS reception in a location with a clear view of the sky.

If the problem continues, consult ForeFlight's official GPS troubleshooting guide before your next flight.

Frequently asked questions

Question: Does ForeFlight need internet to show GPS position?

Answer: No. GPS positioning does not require an internet connection. However, you should download the necessary charts and flight data before departure. A Wi-Fi-only iPad still requires a compatible external GPS source.

Question: Does a cellular iPad need a data plan for GPS?

Answer: No. Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads have built-in GPS that works without an active cellular subscription.

ForeFlight Support

Question: Can Sentry provide GPS to a Wi-Fi-only iPad?

Answer: Yes. ForeFlight-compatible Sentry receivers provide GPS positioning in addition to ADS-B weather and traffic information.
